Catholic Schools’ windfall of scholarship cash from new tax credit

By Zelda Caldwell, October 12, 2026

Many parents who want to send their children to Catholic schools, or already do, will soon be able to tap into billions of dollars in tuition aid in what the U.S. bishops call a “transformative” expansion of school choice across America. Under a new federal tax credit program that takes effect on Jan. 1, millions of K-12 students will be eligible to receive what is expected to be a windfall of scholarship money raised through private donations. This financial aid will be available for students who wish to attend private or religious schools but is not limited to school tuition. Home-schooled and public-school students can also apply for scholarships for tutoring, school supplies, or other educational expenses. Estimates predict that within three years, the measure will help raise $26 billion in donations thanks to the tax credit’s attractive financial incentive.

Pope Leo XIV leaves Gemelli Hospital, returns to Vatican

By Marco Mancini, October 17, 2026

Pope Leo XIV left Agostino Gemelli University Hospital shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time on Saturday and returned to the Vatican. The 71-year-old pope had been admitted last Tuesday and underwent surgery just hours later to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The procedure, which lasted about an hour and a half, was performed using a video-assisted technique, while an intraoperative histological examination confirmed a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Before getting into the car, Leo greeted several members of the faithful who presented him with gifts. The pope did not stay in the papal suite on the hospitalʼs 10th floor, as it was undergoing renovation, but rather in adjacent rooms on the same floor. In the days following the surgery, Leo XIV has resumed his work, meeting at the hospital on various occasions with Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, substitute for general affairs of the Secretariat of State; Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, dean of the College of Cardinals; and Cardinal Baldassare Reina, vicar general of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome.

Chinese bishops: Faster appointments, ‘very small steps’

By Camille Dalmas, October 16, 2026

Appointments of bishops in China that receive Rome’s approval are rare and closely scrutinized. They attract a level of attention not seen for any other country. Since the beginning of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate, they’ve become significantly more frequent, yet draw less media interest. Is this a sign of normalization? Beijing only recognizes 106 dioceses in mainland China. The most recent appointment of a Chinese bishop—for Haimen, named on August 24 and announced on October 15, the day of his consecration—filled a diocese that had been without a bishop since 2023. This is the 21st appointment (though only the 19th episcopal consecration, excluding two transfers) since Beijing and the Vatican signed a secret, provisional agreement on episcopal appointments in 2018. Pope Leo has appointed seven bishops, averaging more than four per year, compared to fewer than two per year during Pope Francis' pontificate. The Holy See knows the compromise is far from perfect and is trying to make the process clearer and more fluid.

Amoris review: Largely non-controversial, but ‘ambiguity’ remains

By Edgar Beltrán, October 16, 2026

Attendees at the papally convened summit on Amoris laetitia told The Pillar that while the bishops' gathering did not resolve disagreement over the document, it did bring differing views and priorities to the fore on the Church’s ministry to married people, and that Pope Leo might eventually issue a document on the topic. The discussions were kept mostly confidential at the pope’s request, but most participants agreed that the tone was largely non-controversial. “I’d describe the discussions as robust but not conflictual; it wasn’t a debate, it’s more about listening because the synodal format favors friendly discussions,” one of the meeting’s experts told The Pillar. “It’s not that the controversy on the sacraments for the remarried was ignored, but the discussions went beyond that.” “I think there’s still ambiguity surrounding chapter VIII [of Amoris], the same ambiguity that we had 10 years ago,” an African bishop attendee told The Pillar. “There’s not enough talk about conversion, about penance. It’s all about listening and accompanying, but listening is not an end in itself.”

Another priest is kidnapped amid Nigeria’s security crisis

By Fredrick Nzwili, October 16, 2026

Catholic leaders in Nigeria‘s Diocese of Otukpo are appealing for prayers following the kidnapping of Father John Inalegwu Otache, pastor of St. Margaret Parish in Ajegbe–Awume. Father Otache was abducted Oct. 13 while returning home from the town of Otukpo in Benue State after reportedly encountering armed kidnappers on a local road. At least 7,825 people were kidnapped in 1,713 incidents in Nigeria between July 2025 and June 2026, according to the International Center for Investigative Reporting. The kidnapping has distressed the Church in the area, with Archbishop Michael Ekwoy Apochi of Otukpo expressing deep sadness over the development and appealing “to all Christ’s faithful within the Diocese and people of goodwill everywhere to fervently pray for the safe and speedy release” of Father Otache. The priest becomes yet another member of the clergy to be kidnapped in Nigeria. The West African country is gripped by a security crisis where armed men locally known as bandits carry out mass kidnapping of all people, including women and children, for ransom.

Bill to abolish DHS and ICE is ‘Marxist nonsense’

By Elizabeth Ervin, October 9, 2026

Democratic Rep. Delia Ramirez’s recently introduced bill, which aims to abolish the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is being criticized as “Marxist” and a major safety concern. Ramirez’s sweeping bill would eliminate funding for various border security measures and anti-terrorism programs, and establish a cabinet-level Department of Community Safety. “[I]t is no surprise the title of her bill is ‘Reimagining Safety Act,’ a blatant attempt to further tear down American institutions and replace them with Marxist nonsense,” Lora Ries, director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at The Heritage Foundation. The bill’s original cosponsors are Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Jim McGovern, D-Mass. According to the bill text, it would repeal the Homeland Security Act of 2002, create a cabinet-level Department of Community Safety, and move DHS’s functions to other agencies.

Pakistani court reopens case of Christian girl forced to marry

By ZENIT Staff, October 13, 2026

A high court in Pakistan has ordered that a police investigation be reopened in the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christian girl who was kidnapped, forced to convert to Islam, and married off to her 30-year-old abductor, Shehryar Ahmad. A district court had previously accepted a report closing the investigation in March. The petition, filed by the family before the High Court, noted that the police allegedly withheld material evidence that Shahbaz’s age was falsified on forged marriage and conversion documents. Under Pakistani law and international standards, a minor cannot legally consent to conversion or marriage. Maria Shahbaz grew up in Pakistan in a Christian home. In July 2025, she was abducted from her family by a 30-year-old man, forced to renounce her faith, and married against her will to her kidnapper. Since then, she has been exposed to grave abuse and exploitation.

War and economic crisis drive Iranian emigration

By Iran - Armenia, October 16, 2026

War and an economic crisis linked to the conflict with the United States and Israel are driving a growing number of citizens of the Islamic Republic to cross the border into Armenia in search of work in the construction and transport sectors, as taxi drivers and home delivery staff. The neighboring country is thus shifting from a long-favored holiday destination for Iranians to an ideal destination for families seeking new income and struggling to make ends meet. For some, reports Iran International (a London-based website close to the opposition), Yerevan is no longer a place to relax but a way to earn the money needed to cover daily expenses and send the rest to families back home. For years, Armenia was a very different destination for many visitors from the Islamic Republic, but as economic difficulties have worsened, the capital's streets now paint a different picture of Iran's presence there.

The Danger of Turning the Exception of Family Into the Rule - Noelle Mering - The power of the extreme case is that it can become archetypal. Once the pathological family becomes the representative family, it creates a lens through which much more ordinary families come to understand themselves. This movement from the extreme case to the universal one is part of a phenomenon I call “trauma hijacking,” in my book, No Contact (Forum, 2026).

Pursuing ‘Sense’ and ‘Sensibility’ in Catholic Dating - Nora Kenney Mittiga - The women of Gen Z have once again done a service to society by giving us (among many other useful terms, like “pick-me girl,” “theatre kid,” and “Disney adult”) the word “delulu.” A humorous abbreviation of “delusional,” it captures a specific kind of female romantic derangement—especially the kind that emerges wherever men, mixed signals, and wishful thinking converge.

Analyzing the Theological Arguments for Abortion Abolitionism - Dr. Kody W. Cooper - For several years now, the so-called abolitionist movement in abortion politics was considered the fringe of a fringe. But the movement is gaining traction, and a recent debate sponsored by Students for Life of America’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement spotlights key strategic cleavages dividing pro-lifers. But do the abolitionists’ theological and biblical arguments withstand scrutiny?

Midterm elections: Don’t be ‘discouraged’, you have a duty to vote

By Amira Abuzeid and Ken Oliver-Méndez/EWTN, October 16, 2026

As U.S. midterm elections get into full swing, both the country’s Catholic bishops and outside advocacy organizations urge voters to participate and “put their faith before politics” as they exercise their civic duty. In an Oct. 14 message, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley, said that while Americans might be feeling discouraged from voting because we live in “a time of deep political division,” such discouragement “is not a Christian virtue.” Archbishop Coakley emphasized that for citizens in a representative democracy, “participation in public life — including voting — is both a right and a responsibility.” “I would ask all Catholics to put their faith before politics,” Archbishop Coakley exhorted, calling on the faithful to “judge candidates and elected officials by their actions, not merely their promises, and how those actions promote the common good.”

Death penalty is a sore point for papal authority

By Joseph Shaw, October 15, 2026

Pope Leo XIV marked World Day Against the Death Penalty, observed on October 10, with the following message on X: “The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded, and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment…” To all but the crustiest reactionaries among Western elites, plus some populists, the statement might well seem obvious. It is not obvious, however, for Catholics. Pope Francis’s novel position on the death penalty built on foundations laid by Pope John Paul II, who developed the view that capital punishment is no longer necessary and is at least in some tension with human dignity. Leaving aside the curious claim that criminals on death row don’t have “the chance to reform,” it is worth noting that a few years earlier, in the then-new Catechism, the Catechism does not explain why the ultimate punishment, death, is contrary to the criminal’s dignity, whereas lesser punishments affirm it.

The Imaginative Conservative

Willa Cather’s Catholic sensibility

By Joseph Pearce, October 15, 2026

Willa Cather is one of the finest American novelists of the twentieth century. O Pioneers! (1913), My Ántonia (1918), and Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927) are considered classics of American literature. She won the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), and F. Scott Fitzgerald held her in such high esteem that he considered The Great Gatsby a failure compared with My Ántonia. Cather’s novel The Professor’s House was published in 1925, the same year in which The Great Gatsby first appeared. Cather’s novel hints at the necessity of virtue much more evocatively than does Fitzgerald’s. This sensibility also emerges in Augusta, the devoutly Catholic woman who serves as the seamstress for the professor’s family. Augusta’s devoutly Catholic presence is the presence of the real, the perennial reality that permeates the past, present, and future, making sense of all time from the perspective of eternity. By concluding the novel this way, Willa Cather baptizes the whole novel with Augusta’s presence.

It’s time for an Anti-Pornography crusade

By Mary Eberstadt, October 17, 2026

Cornell University is my alma mater. I spent four years there in a scholarship house known widely as a redoubt of nerds. As it happened, Telluride House shared a wall with one of the most raucous fraternities on campus. In December 2008, thanks in part to forward-looking philanthropist Sean Fieler, a first-of-its-kind conference on “The Social Costs of Pornography” was held at the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, N.J., revealing a truth that overrules today’s idolization of sexual autonomy: Pornography is poison. It alters brains, kills romance, and leads to intense loneliness. It creates addicts and destroys families. The empirical record has been well documented since that landmark conference and thereafter. The data are in. We need to re-stigmatize pornography. We – meaning not only those of us present, but also people across the West – need to understand that pornography today is like tobacco was yesterday: ubiquitous and toxic and in need of social reform.
